Recently, accordionist Stefan Georgiev turned 40. In fact he was trained in classical piano while at the music school and 13 years ago founded a trio featuring piano, guitar and vocals. With this trio he has been working ever since in Belgium, Norway, Scotland and Germany. His wife Kremena teams up with him as singer, though she recently tries to stay home longer to take care of the their three-year-old son Georgi.

It was his father Georgi Stefanov from the Northern village of Reselets who encouraged Stefan Georgiev’s love of folk music. He is a folk musician and a famous accordionist. His mother Maria Vsiliadou from the villge of Kaviso, Greece, came to live in Sofia where she met her future husband. Stefan was born in 1973 in Varna on the Black Sea and was encouraged to take up music by both his parents. At age 8 he started playing the piano. Some years on, his father revealed to him the fascination and skills in folk music.

As accordionist Stefan Georgiev has been quite productive releasing four albums and demonstrating brilliant technique and nice melodies.

The accordionist made his first recordings at Radio Varna, back in 1989. “in 1995 and 1996 I released the albums Euroromances and Balkan Chain & Rutchebitsa dances”, he says. “In 2002 Folklore Tapestry was released, and in 2005, The Magic of the Accordion. In 2000 I teamed up with the great master of the accordion Ibro Lolov and we released two joint albums. Our families were close, and my father always pointed to Ibro Lolov as an accordionist with a brilliance and purity of style in playing folk music. I have learned a lot from Ibro, and he has been my idol since childhood. My style of playing has been influenced by him. He advised me not to neglect the melody and not to complicate the harmony, so that my performance would be close to the listeners. Once, as we joined a TV show together, he said I would be his successor, and I felt happy. The accordion is the source of color and passion in my life”, concludes instrumentalist Stefan Georgiev.
