Several people changed the perceptions of opera music during the last two decades of the 20th century. Three tenors Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras conquered the hearts of millions of people across the globe with their performance. In Bulgaria, a small country, yet rich in music talents, the renowned singers have their followers, too. The story of The Unique Voices trio starts in 2007. Here is what one of its members Veselin Vachev told Radio Bulgaria.

“We introduced ourselves to the choreographer and impresario of Bulgare ensemble Mr. Hristo Dimitrov. He liked us a lot and showed willingness to work with us and later became our producer. Later Georgi Petrov and Boris Lukov joined me. All three of us are following the rule to work professionally. We work for a certain cause - to attract people to this music genre and do something valuable. Of course, sometimes we have different views on many issues. However, it has its positive side - we look for different interpretations until we find those who appeal to our audience the most. We compromise and solve every issue in an intelligent conversation. I pray to God that our good relationship will continue in the future.”

The three Bulgarian tenors also tackle popular genres, which include evergreens, rock and roll and other styles. However, they remain true to their greatest love- opera music. Recently they presented their debut album. It contains some of the most popular and loved arias and canzonets in the opera field. The CD ends with the aria of Prince Calaf from the Turandot opera by Giacomo Puccini. The triumphant cry Vincero (meaning I will win) at the final gives the name of the album. Veselin Vachev explains why they decided to name their album Vincero:

“We included some of the most popular pieces from the tenor repertoire. We made an album which reflects our characters. We want to be winners and also want our pieces to bear this energy. We want to see our audience crave for victory when they listen to our CD. Some of our fans who have already listened to this album said they had a very emotional time.”

The Bulgarian tenors held concerts in the USA, Canada, Russia and other European countries. In parallel with their concert performances, the musicians hold solo performances, too. The youngest one, Boris Lukov is a soloist of the Varna Opera Theater. “We are very proud of him, because he makes our country famous abroad at his multiple tours”, Veselin Vachev further says.

Bearing in mind the quality of the three Bulgarian tenors, the comparison with Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras can not be neglected. Who is Mr. Vachev’s favorite world tenor?

“I can not say I have a favorite tenor among those three renowned world musicians, simply because they acted as one on the world music stage. Placido Domingo has a wonderful tone quality. Luciano Pavarotti was shining on the stage and Jose Carrera’s voice is wonderful, especially in his young period. The beauty of the scope in the tenor voice is a rare sight now. This was among the main reasons to call our group Unique Voices. We are unique with the energy we emit when we perform together on stage. Pavarotti, Carreras and Domingo bore great magic as well.”
