40 percent of Bulgarian roads do not meet European standards

Nearly 40% of the road network in Bulgaria does not meet European road standards. These roads are assigned to the category of "poor quality roads." According to the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency, tarmac on some roads has not been replaced for the past 30 years. Last year, the World Bank prepared a road strategy for Bulgaria. In order for this country to meet European criteria when roads are concerned, it should invest 14 billion euro by 2020.
