Palm trees set to conquer Bulgaria

Photo: library

Palm trees have become part of the increasingly exotic townscape of Kazanlak, Central Southern Bulgaria. Apart from the newly planted Paulownia in the whole town, many residents grow their own banana, kiwi and lemon trees and other plants untypical for this part of the world. Apart from being beautiful, palm trees also bear fruit. Bananas have also been quite productive. People jokingly say that Bulgaria could begin to turn into a banana republic. To protect exotic trees during the snowy winter, Kazanlak residents will wrap them in straw and nylon.
