Today marks St. Athanasius Feast

Photo: library

The Orthodox Church honours today the memory of Athanasius the Great. In popular Christianity in Bulgaria the feast is known as Atanasovden. Athanasius the Great was born in 295 AD in Egypt’s capital Alexandria. As theologian he became known for his participation in the ecumenical council of Nicaea and his strong opposition to priest Arius who believed that Jesus Christ was inferior to God the Father. Thanks to Athanasius, Arius was expelled from the church. Athanasius the Great died on 2 May 373 as an Archbishop of Alexandria. Once Atanasovden comes, the spring is knocking on the door, Bulgarians often say. In traditional beliefs St. Athanasius reigns over winter cold, snow and ice.
