The Bulgarian piano duo Aglika Genova and Liuben Dimitrov has arrived from Hannover, Germany, where the two musicians have been living and working since 1993. They are giving a concert in Sofia - more details from them:
L. Dimitrov: I think that the audience tonight should expect a very interesting program. In the first place, we will perform Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra by Bela Bartok - a very captivating work. With a group like the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Yordan Kamdzhalov, I think the performance will be first-class. The second part includes one of Gustav Mahler's symphonies.
A. Genova: The idea is fully Bulgarian: we were actually invited to perform at Bulgaria Hall by the Bulgarian National Radio production house. We are also grateful to conductor Yordan Kamdzhalov and to the percussionists who have joined us for the concert, the brothers Dobry and Plamen Paliev.
After the concert tonight, Aglika Genova and Liuben Dimitrov are going to record the percussion work at the Bulgarian National Radio. Especially for them Yamaha has moved in a grand piano to partner with the existing piano at Studio 1.
The talented duo has recently released its 14th album under the CPO Classics label. The CD gathers together all works for two pianos composed by Franz Liszt.
L. Dimitrov: Anytime we have given concerts around the world, viewers who have not so far been acquainted with piano works for a duo have been quite surprised that this format is still little known. The richness of sound is fascinating from the very first chords played. Some of our students who opt for a piano duo career appreciate this very much. This makes us happy because this format enriches the piano's solo role.
By end-2015 the schedule of the two pianists is tight with tours of America, China and Europe. In the summer they will be back to Bulgaria to lead a master class at the Alegra Music Academy in the Danube City of Rousse. This time however they are going to train solo pianists.
L. Dimitrov: This year in Dusniki, Poland, the 70th edition of the Fryderyk Chopin piano competition is due. Its artistic director is Piotr Paleczny, President of the Warsaw Chopin Competition. There we are going to play works by that musician of great genius. For this edition of the festival pianists from all over the world have been invited and to appear there is a great honour to us.
