Easter as seen by kids

Photo: BGNES

How are Easter celebrations seen by children? Naturally, for them their deep spiritual meanings remain more or less hidden and instead they are keen on their joyous and colorful aspects. Children enjoy the dyeing of eggs most, and the traditional egg tapping to nominate the strongest Easter egg in the family. They love the making of the sweet Easter bread (kozunak) decorated wuth almonds and raisins and of course, having a bite from it.

Reporter Eleonora Nikolova met with the children from the Musarto Art School to ask them what they think about the Resurrection of Christ, whether they are aware of traditions and what their favorite moments of the feast are. We also bring you some songs performed by talented young singers.

„With mom we dye the eggs on Thursday or on Saturday ahead of Easter”, Krasimir Zdravkov, 11, explains. “We first begin with the red egg, and when it is dyed mom rubs it against our cheeks and foreheads for sound health. On Easter we greet each other with 'Christ is risen' and the answer is 'Truly He is risen'.

What do you do on Easter first thing in the morning? Five-year-old Kaloyan Nikolov says more:

„I begin to feel great joy, because on Easter we always go to visit granny. We dye eggs and then with my cousins we watch who'll win the egg fight. Once there was a boy called Zhechko who had a wooden egg and cheated on my cousin. I went to the countryside last year but no one let me dye eggs. Why? I know that these are put into jars with dyes with a spoon. And I know that the first egg is always red. The oldest woman makes crosses on the foreheads of children.”

For 6-year-old Mihaela Andonova the Resurrection of Christ does not boil down to colorful eggs and merry games.

„With my mom I go to church and we light candles. They bless us there and give us some water to drink. When I wake up on the next day we go to church again and light candles. What shall I tell all people on Easter? Well, I love you all.”

Rozalia Angelova, 12, knows a lot about Bulgarian traditions.

„I think it is interesting to observe traditions. After all we are Bulgarians and we have to know about them, because they are one of the greatest things in the world. I go to visit my granny in the countryside on St. Lazarus Day, before Easter. Granny dresses up us kids in folk costumes as tradition requires. We wear flower wreathes and go to visit the neighbors. We sing Lazarus songs and everyone give us sweets and eggs that we after that dye. When I beat my brothers in the egg fight I feel proud. I wish to all who observe this tradition the best of health, happiness and luck”.
