Scientists from the Medical University in Varna started research on the useful properties of five species of seaweed. According to the head of the team Mona Stancheva such a research is carried out for the first time in Bulgaria. In her words, the Black Sea has more than 600 kinds of seaweeds, but scientists have chosen to work on five of the most frequently spreading along the Bulgarian shores. According to experts these species contain biologically active substances also present in fish – vitamins and omega fatty acids. The task is to specify how Black Sea seaweeds can be used in preparing nutrition additives, medicines and cosmetic products.
