Bulgaria’s President Rossen Plevneliev admitted that he was surprised by the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to demand from the state to return church relics to Greece. The demand was made during the official ceremony when Bartholomew was bestowed with the highest order- Stara Planina Order-First Degree. Patriarch Bartholomew visited Bulgaria at the invitation of the Bulgarian Academy of Science and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. His scandalous words caused indignation amidst the Bulgarian public. The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Mihail Mikov urged National Assembly President Tsetksa Tsacheva to cancel the promulgation of that order in the State Gazette.
