The number of Bulgarian school students has decreased from 856,000 in 2007/2008 to 749,000 in the period 2013/2014. The reason is the demographic decline combined with a growing number of whole families emigrating abroad. While in 2007 this was the reason for 19 percent of the dropouts in Bulgarian schools, six years later, the share of children who left school because they emigrated reaches more than 30 percent. This is what data by the National Audit Office related to the social and economic effects stemming from the school network optimization in the period 2012-2014 show.
