Ancient beech forests in the reserves of the Central Balkan National Park can get worldwide recognition after Bulgaria was invited to join the initiative of UNESCO called "beech forests - a common heritage of Europe". It covers beech massifs in the Carpathians, in Slovakia and Ukraine, and old beech forests in Germany. The recently proposed beech forests are in Bulgaria, Albania, Austria, Belgium and another seven countries. Beech forests in the Central Balkan park are one of the most extensive natural ranges in Europe. Most of the trees are over 100 years old. 150-year-olds among them occupy more than 14 thousand ha, and in some places there are forests older than 240 years.
