Great Lent begins

Today is the start of Easter lent – a period which takes seven weeks, ending the day before Easter, which this year falls on May 1. The 49-day fasting period symbolizes the time Christ the Savior spent in the desert in preparation for his sacrifice. That is why it is considered that by rejecting meat and animal products, man cleanses his body and soul. Great Lent is also a time for reflection, for rationalization of one’s life, for reassessment of what one has done. It is a time for repenting and seeking a new way to perfection and to one’s soul.
