75% of the 2015 graduates of Sofia’s University of Medicine wanted to emigrate. Low wages were one of the main reasons outlined, followed by gaps in the healthcare system, tough hierarchy climbing and the lack of modern facilities. A total of 153 doctors have left over the first 4 months of 2016. They have moved to England, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Greece and Cyprus. A trend has been spotted over the past few years – doctors with solid experience have also been looking for job abroad. There are 31,383 doctors in Bulgaria right now, as some 355 of those are aged 51 – 60. Barely 8.83% of the doctors are below the age of 30.
