According to latest traffic police data, there are 173 electric cars and 2,001 hybrids registered in Bulgaria; as well as 42 electric trucks, two buses and one tractor and 399 motorcycles and mopeds. Out of all hybrid cars 1,550 are powered by petrol and electricity and 51 by diesel and electricity. Out of all 4.2 million motor vehicles registered in Bulgaria, around 200, 000 are powered by methane and propane-butane.
Experts say that the state has not done enough to stimulate the use of environmentally friendly vehicles. At present they are tax exempt, though taxes are not very high anyway. Promotional eco-taxes are in place which are 30 percent lower for electric cars and 15 percent lower for hybrid vehicles. In some countries, there exist incentives for the purchase of an electric car that bring the price down by around 5,000 euro.
