Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has announced that the government is nominating Bulgarian EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva to stand for the post of Secretary-General of the UN.
Borissov commented that Bulgaria’s candidate thus far, Irina Bokova, had made a great deal of effort but that at the latest Security Council ballot she had slipped in the rankings by one place and that there were quite a few countries ahead of her now, including female candidates. Unofficially, expectancies at the UN are for a women from Eastern Europe to fill the post of secretary-general and we are expecting Kristalina Georgieva to be a more successful candidate, he said.
