Two groups of Bulgarian scientists will join the 25th Jubilee Antarctic Expedition. Senior geologists Associate Professor Dimo Dimov and Dr Kamen Bonev, as well as Associate Professor Alexander Shopov from the National Sports Academy departed to Antarctica on Friday. On Sunday another group consisting of paleontologist Dr Docho Dochev, petrologist Stafan Velev, geochemist Nadya Yanakieva and geodesist Dr Asparuh Kamburov are to fly from Sofia to Punta Arenas. The Bulgarian scientists are to fulfill scientific projects within the ambitious five-year National Program for Polar Research of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, approved by the government in August 2016. Associate Professor Shopov will analyze the state of the human body in extreme conditions. Geodesist Asparuh Kamburov is to register distortions of GPS signals near the South Magnetic Pole and Nadya Yanakieva is to join international teams from Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Chile and USA exploring the permafrost (constantly frozen soil).
