Bulgaria expecting record wheat harvest of almost 6 million tons this year

This year's wheat harvest in Bulgaria, according to preliminary data, would be about 6 million tons. This would be a historic peak for Bulgaria, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced.

Growth is due to a higher average yield per decare, which has grown by about 8 percent compared to the previous year - or 513 kg/decare now against 475 kg in 2016. In addition to the larger quantity this year's harvest is also expected to be of better quality.

This alleviates fears that the high yields and the penetration of high-yielding French and Austrian varieties in Bulgaria would degrade the quality of Bulgarian grain. The export of wheat from Bulgaria has also marked a rise and by August 15 it would exceed 1 million tones, it was reported.
