Police patrols along the Sofia-Varna road on the territory of the region of Lovech will be doubled on weekends and on holidays after the three severe road accidents that took place there since Friday, claiming the lives of 11 and injuring 26, 4 of them in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Interior Minister Valentin Radev, Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Mladen Marinov, the Director of the Lovech regional interior ministry department inspected the route. Minister Radev stated:
“We set up a mini situation room to look into what happened. A third road accident, one more person killed. We want to see what this place is like. My own concern was most of all to see whether the instructions of the Chief Secretary to enhance surveillance here were being followed and to see what additional steps can be taken so this won't happen again tomorrow. I can't believe there has been another accident on the same spot, with loss of life.”
Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Mladen Marinov has instructed all patrols to turn on their police lights on the entire territory of the country:
“We are looking into every option, but I want to say, once again: lives and safety are in the hands of drivers. And we, as drivers, when we see these lights should realize that something like this has happened and that we are no exception, and that if we are not careful, the same thing could happen to us. The road section is new, the asphalt is new, the road markings are clear to see, the signs are there. Any normal driver will see that this is a built-up area and they should drive carefully.”
Mladern Marinov added that the causes of the first major accident, the collision between a bus and a truck, were being investigated.
