Between 1992 and 2016 production of fruit and vegetables in Bulgaria decreased nearly threefold, data of the National Union of Gardeners in Bulgaria show. Due to te significant increase of imports of fruit and vegetables many farmers prefer to grow cereal crops. 88% of the farmers receive 20% of the subsidies and the rest of the money is allotted to the large grain-producers. That is why, according to the Bulgarian gardeners, the subsidies should be calculated as percentage of the prime cost of each crop grown in this country. Meanwhile, the number of Bulgarian farmers increased from 68,000 in 2012 to 90,000 in 2016.
