About 2000 joined a commemorative rally in the village of Mogilyane, Southeastern Bulgaria, for the victims in the forceful renaming of Bulgarian Turks 33 years ago. Three died in the village after clashes occurred with the communist militia back in 1984 over the policy of the communist government to rename Turks giving them Bulgarian names.

Present at the event was Mustafa Karadayi, the leader of DPS, the predominantly ethnic Turkish parliamentary party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, as well as the entire party leadership.

Speaking at the rally Mustafa Karadayi urged the members of the other predominantly ethnic Turkish party in Bulgaria DOST to join DPS, for the sake of unification. In the meantime, DOST held commemorative events parallel to DPS.

Shortly before the rally, the Turkish Ambassador to Bulgaria Hasan Ulusoy and the Grand Mufti of Bulgaria laid flowers at the grave of one of the victims but did not join the gathering. The official interpretation of the local authorities who organized the event is that the ambassador had paid a private visit.
