Acoustic Version: 33 years since their “flying start”

In 2018, Acoustic Version celebrate 33 years since their foundation. To mark the occasion, they will give a concert on 17 January in Studio 5 of the National Palace of Culture.

Acoustic Version, founded in 1985, is the brainchild of pianist Antoni Donchev and drummer Hristo Yotsov. Later, in 1989, they were joined by George Donchev. The duo was off to a flying start, winning awards at two major jazz festivals – in Hoeilaart, Belgium and Leverkusen, Germany.

“I have always firmly believed that, regardless of how many years may pass, or of the influences all around, Acoustic Version’s style is a brand unto itself,” says Hristo Yotsov in an interview for Radio Bulgaria. “For us, Acoustic Version is more than a necessity, it is our destiny. When we are on stage and our different worlds, our lives in music come together, space itself seems to be transformed and we all converge on one point. We invariably share the same space, a space of our own and that creates such a warm feeling, and one other thing which is very important – a balance in the colourful array of our appearances connected with other projects. There is something mystical in the way we understand one another when we are on stage. On the other hand it is understandable – we have been together for so many years. We don’t even need to talk, music is our only means of communication.”

For Antoni Donchev and Hristo Yotsov, being a musician runs in the family. Their partnership on stage actually goes back to their school days. The two have a solid classical music education. They are familiar to the public from many projects in different genres and with different performers. They are now among the most famous names in Bulgarian music. Antoni Donchev is conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Big Band, and Hristo Yotsov is a professor at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music. Since the very start, Acoustic Version have only performed their own original music, and it will be the focus of the concert on 17 January.
