The current Bulgarian expedition to Antarctica has been carrying out the most thorough research in the area of the Hannah Point, situated 12.5 km away from this country’s base. The geologists have worked on the most northerly territory, free from snow and ice. They have found there numerous plant fossils and thin carbon layers. The fossils found inside them belong to plants that are some 86 mln. years old – from the Late Chalcolithic period. Those have preserved themselves in green sandstones with fine structure. The new fossil collection gathered will be surveyed at the Paleontology and Historical Geology Museum with the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. The scientists hope to reveal facts of the image of the ancient Gondwana supercontinent, as what’s today Antarctica used to be part of it. Evergreen vegetation used to spread across today’s ice coverage and only fossil remains of it can be found now, the expedition members say.
