The European Parliament's Committee on Petitions has supported the petition of the Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad, which aims to protect so-called "small-entry" languages in the EU.
Svetoslav Malinov, rapporteur on the topic, has told the Bulgarian National Radio that he expected the topic to be discussed in the Strasbourg in May. "The debate will be linked to reforms in EU education standards, which means that this issue will be seen as part of the overall EU educational reform," Mr. Malinov said. The association pointed out that the issue affected hundreds of thousands of European families and their children. The petition calls for the European Union to provide a legal opportunity for end-of-school exams to be held in all of the official languages of the European Union, including Bulgarian. The document also calls for opportunity for language examination in any of the official languages of the EU, in case there was a proven interest on the part of the pupils, as the result of the exam should be present in the student’s diploma.
