State of Virginia recognizes Bulgarian as foreign language in high school diplomas

Following Maryland, the American State of Virginia has included Bulgarian as a foreign language in high school diplomas, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

The Bulgarian language test held at the Department for Language Teaching at St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia has been recognized and included in the Seal of Biliteracy program of Virginia.

The decision was made on 10 April at an extraordinary meeting of the Virginia Board of Education convened at the request of the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington DC.

As early as this year graduates of high schools in Virginia will be free to pass an online exam in the Bulgarian language and obtain a Seal of Biliteracy.
