US Ambassador to Bulgaria Eric Rubin has said that Bulgaria’s long-term priority of reaching 2% of GDP for defense will place the country in a distinctive positive position at the NATO summit in July. Rubin has recalled that Greece, Turkey and Romania fly F-16 fighter jets.

A few days ago the Bulgarian parliament gave the green light to the purchase of new fighter aircraft and vehicles for the infantry. Commenting the step Rubin has said that the new land vehicles will enhance Bulgaria’s role in the Alliance. He has added that as a US ambassador it is normal to mention the US fighter jets.

Rubin has pointed to modernization and interoperability as key for the fulfilment of Bulgaria’s commitments to NATO. The total worth of projects until 2024 is about 1.6 billion euro.
