The Catholic and Armenian churches and the Grand Mufti in Bulgaria have officially declared their disapproval of a bill of amendments to the Religious Denominations Act.
Discontent has been provoked by the following proposed changes to the 2002 Act: a right to state subsidy for religious communities attracting at least 1 percent of the country’s population; a requirement to clerics to be Bulgarian citizens who have graduated theology in this country; and a ban on financing by foreign physical persons and legal entities.
The political parties in Bulgaria contend that the changes will be effective against the threat of terrorism but representatives of denominations have said that they are reminiscent of the situation during totalitarianism.
