Parliament passes toll system at first reading

Photo: picture library

The Transport Committee in the National Assembly has passed at first reading a bill of amendments to the Road Traffic Act and the introduction of a road toll system. From the beginning of 2019, an electronic vignette sticker will be introduced.

The toll system will be applicable to vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes or more. To fix the charge and reach of tolls a report is expected from the World Bank. It is however known that that toll size will vary depending on the kind of road and for roads in very bad shape no toll will be paid.

According to plan the toll system should take effect in August 2019 but it could be introduced even earlier provided contractors do their job ahead of schedule.
