A campaign is being launched in Belene for honouring the victims of 20th century totalitarian regimes.

23 August is European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Stalinism and Nazism under the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism, adopted by the European Parliament in June 2008, and endorsed by the Bulgarian National Assembly.

It is the date on which, in 1939, the German–Soviet Nonaggression Pact - the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact – was signed. In Sofia the day will be marked with a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial monument to the victims of the communist regime.
