The team, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bonny Petrunova, Director of the National Museum of History, exploring the medieval town of Lyutitsa near Ivaylovgrad in the region of Haskovo, have found the first gold coin on site. The coin is of the kind introduced by Emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes of Nicaea, who ruled from 1222 until 1254 AD. Coins like it were minted by the coin masters of Venice. The gold coin, Prof. Konstantin Dochev says, dates back to 1240-1260. In July this year, a seal was found that once belonged to Empress Jolanda di Monferrato who is connected to the Palaiologos dynasty. Finding a gold coin in this medieval town goes to show that it is a fount of information and treasure.
