Life expectancy in three Bulgarian regions is lowest in the whole EU, an analysis of Eurostat shows. According to official statistics, life expectancy in the Northwest Region is 73.3 years, in the Central North Region- 74.4 years and in the Southwest Region- 74.4 years. The average life expectancy in Bulgaria in 2016 was 74.9 years which places Bulgaria at the bottom of the EU life expectancy ranking. From 1990 until 2016 the number of pensioners in Bulgaria went up and the number of newly born dwindled, Eurostat statistics further shows. According to the analysis the average life expectancy in the EU is 81 years. Spain and Italy are the EU countries with highest life expectancy.
