Parliament approves Movement for Rights and Freedom’s media law

Photo: BGNES

The National Assembly voted, conclusively, the media law submitted by the opposition Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, with principal author Delyan Peevski.

Under the new law, any financing of press, electronic or online media will be declared on an annual basis. Delaying or failing to do so, or presenting false data will entail a fine.

A special register will also include information about the sources of financing. The only opponents to the law at this second reading vote were the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, who say that this law will not, in fact, bring to light who the real media owners are.
