A unique gold crucifix, with a fraction of the cross of Christ has been discovered by archaeologists in Trapezitsa fortress in Veliko Turnovo.
It weighs 75 grams and is highly ornamented. The cross was found fully intact in a chamber behind the altar of the church discovered recently in Trapezitsa. Experts say the cross of Byzantine workmanship, dated to the late 12th century, is the only encolpion cross made of gold to have ever been found in the world.
There are three silver crosses at the museum in Zheravna. During this year’s excavations in the Western part of Trapezitsa, archaeologists uncovered a portion of a street and more than 30 graves with gold jewellery and gold coins in them.
