Just a few hours from now Bulgarian swimmer Petar Stoychev and 15 other swimmers from 9 countries are leaving by ship from Punta Arenas in Chile bound for Antarctica, where they will take part in the first swimming race ever organized in the icy waters of Antarctica.

Yesterday the swimmers had a test swim in the Straits of Magellan where the temperature of the water is 7 degrees C. The start will be on 21 or 22 November and the distance – 1 kilometre.

“I am healthy and really motivated to win this historic first race in Antarctica,” Petar Stoychev said. While in Chile, the Bulgarian swimmer spent the last few days training in a swimming pool of cold water to get acclimated to conditions in the Antarctic.
