The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy adopted (with 38 votes in favor and 3 votes against) the report of the decommissioning of units 1-4 of Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria. Bulgaria’s MEP Peter Kouroumbashev is the main rapporteur under this report. After the negotiations, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy decided that a minimum (instead of a maximum) of 50% of the money necessary for the decommissioning of the four nuclear reactors of Kozloduy NPP will be paid by the European Union. Some of the arguments of MEP Kouroumbashev were that units 3 and 4 of Kozloduy NPP were prematurely shut down and that they could have still produced electricity worth EUR 400 million per year. Bulgaria closed these nuclear reactors as part of the EU accession deal. According to the current proposal, EUR 63 million will be paid for decommissioning nuclear facilities at Kozloduy NPP. The European Parliament will vote this decision later.
