European Parliament discusses resolution on accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen

The European Parliament will discuss today and vote on Tuesday a new resolution which calls for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen Area. MEP and President of the Party of European Socialists Sergei Stanishev is a rapporteur for the resolution. In his view, the two countries have been meeting the Schengen membership criteria in the past 6 years, but have remained outside Schengen due to double standards and discrimination. Stanishev contends that this injustice must end. The members of the European Parliament are expected to support the report, but the final decision must be taken unanimously by the EU Council. This is the fifth resolution related to Bulgaria’s and Romania’s accession to Schengen since 2011.
