Bulgarian Food Safety Agency checks for non-existent animals receiving real EU subsidies

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and veterinarians are doing inventory of livestock animals in this country. Their purpose is to find out whether some farmers receive subsidies for non-existent animals. Such animals are registered with fake ear tags. According to the National Association of Sheep Breeders in Bulgaria, at least 30% of the Bulgarian sheep and goats exist virtually only. Bulgaria’s MEP Momchil Nekov contends that unscrupulous farmers absorb EU money through at least 300,000 non-existent animals which has negative impact on the real farmers. The Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food promises that the check will obliterate all possible frauds this time.
