Holy mass presided over by Pope Francis brings together thousands in the centre of Sofia

Thousands of people from Bulgaria and abroad, bearing the flags of Bulgaria and of the Vatican gathered in St. Alexander I Square in the centre of Sofia for a holy mass presided over by Pope Francis.

People from different denominations in the country, where Catholicism is the fourth biggest confession after Orthodox Christianity, Islam and Protestantism, were invited to attend.

Via world media the visit of the head of the Roman Catholic Church to Bulgaria is being followed by over 100 million people around the world.

Tomorrow Pope Francis is to visit a refugee camp in Sofia and celebrate mass in the town of Rakovski, Southern Bulgaria.
