There are a series of project and exploitation differences between the nuclear reactors of Chernobyl type RBMK and the reactors in Kozloduy NPP (WWER) which make such nuclear accident impossible in Bulgaria, the Executive Secretary of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum Bulatom Stanislav Georgiev said in response to criticism about the security of nuclear power engineering after the film Chernobyl was shown on HBO. Sergey Tsochev who served as Chairman of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency between 2004 and 2013 added that the nuclear accident in Chernobyl has contributed to boost security in nuclear power engineering. After the nuclear accident many new safety standards were adopted. The EU has also adopted a series of directives connected to nuclear safety which are mandatory for the member states.
