In the middle of July the Orthodox Bulgarians honor the memory of Saint Marina the Great Martyr. The sixteen-year-old girl was sentenced to death in 289 AD, because of her belief in Jesus Christ. According to the popular belief in Bulgaria Saint Marina is a symbol of celestial fire, patron saint of the harvest and the cornfields. This is connected with the ancient pagan traditions-celebrations have been held over the centuries in the hottest days in the middle of July in honor of the fiery sun. Saint Marina is a patron saint of waters and the protector of the Southern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. Recently, the relics of the saint were brought to the city of Plovdiv (Central South Bulgaria). Orthodox Christians had several day to see these relics in Saint Marina church.
