Archaeologists have discovered the opulent 14th century burial of a hitherto unknown aristocrat – Gospodin Georgi Palaiologos– on the Black Sea Cape Kaliakra.
The excavations are headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boni Petrunova, director of the National Museum of History. A great many funeral offerings have been found enabling researchers to reconstruct the funeral rites. The burial pit is fashioned on a rock and surrounded by stones. The face of the nobleman is covered with a piece of luxurious fabric, there are gifts and a glass container on his body for collecting the tears of the mourners.
The most striking of the burial gifts is a massive gold ring with the name of the man interred – Georgi - and his aristocratic lineage.
