The Permanent Representatives of the EU Member States have approved the candidature of Romanian magistrate Laura Kövesi for Attorney General of the European Union. Out of 22 votes possible (not all EU Member States are involved in the creation of the European Attorney General's Office) Kövesi received 17 votes of support. Before that the European Parliament had also given its approval. Kövesi could take the position after the end of interinstitutional negotiations. The election of Laura Kövesi as EU Attorney General has triggered a political storm in Romania. Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă has opposed the election and instructed Romania's ambassador to the EU, Luminita Odobescu to vote against. According to diplomatic sources, however, she did not receive written instructions and voted in favor of Kövesi and is now risking losing her position. While heading Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate, Laura Kövesi sent dozens of government officials to jail, winning Brussels' approval, but in Romania she was suspected of sacrificing innocent people because of her international career plans.
