Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov has informed Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva of an investigation into espionage activity in Bulgaria by a Russian citizen.

It has been established that, for years, he has been carrying out intelligence activities and has regularly held secret meeting with Bulgarian citizens, as well as a senior official with access to classified EU and NATO information. The Russian citizen has diplomatic status – first secretary at the embassy of the Russian Federation in Sofia. The prosecutor’s office states that under the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations the Russian agent has immunity.

On 25 October the diplomat departed from Bulgaria.
