The President of the European Parliament David Sassoli confirmed that he received a request from the Bulgarian authorities to strip Bulgaria’s MEP from the Group of European Socialists and Democrats Elena Yoncheva off immunity. The request is due to the pretrial proceedings against Yoncheva initiated over money laundering from the bankrupt Corporate Commercial Bank. Elena Yoncheva, who is a journalist by profession, commented for BNR that 7 documentaries were shot with the money. The money was also used for the purchase of filming equipment and the documentaries were already shown on TV. MEP Yoncheva reminded that in July the European Court of Justice received her complaint against the allegation of the Bulgarian authorities, which in her words means that the complaint is potentially well-founded. Elena Yoncheva said she expected that the whole truth around this case would come out: “Sooner or later the truth will come out. In Bulgaria this usually happens late.”
