For Sofia Istanbul Convention is not binding EU document

Photo: BGNES

The Bulgarian government has endorsed a position before the European Court of Justice in a case brought by the European Parliament seeking the accession of the community to the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention). The Bulgarian government does not agree that the Istanbul Convention should be considered as part of the founding treaties of the EU. The Convention cannot be considered as a binding document without the consent of all EU member states, the Bulgarian government has decided. Sofia is unable to give its consent because of the Constitutional Court's Decision No. 13 of July 27, 2018, which states that the Istanbul Convention does not comply with the Bulgarian Constitution, it was reported.
