Bulgarians keep their money in bank deposits despite low interest rates

By the end of December 2019, the interest rates on twelve month deposits amount to 0.2%. Interest rates on bank loans were to the tune of 4%. However, adjusted with the annual inflation (3.8%) the interest rate on twelve month bank deposits was negative to the tune of -3.6% and the interest rate on bank loans was close to zero, data of the Bulgarian National Bank show. People lose part of their savings due to the low interest rates and bad management of their personal finance, the credit expert Tihomir Toshev told the Bulgarian National Radio. All bank deposits up to EUR 100,000 are guaranteed by the state. That is why the Bulgarians are not looking for alternative financial instruments despite the low interest rate, Tihomir Toshev further said.
