Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna create more than half of all jobs in Bulgaria

At the end of 2019 over 1.2 million people were employed in Bulgaria’s leading economic centers Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, analysis of the Institute for Market Economics shows. Over 700,000 people are employed in Bulgaria’s capital. A total of 324,000 people work in the second-largest city Plovdiv and 229,000 are employed in Bulgaria’s coastal city and third-biggest city Varna. Over 80% of the active population in the city of Veliko Tarnovo was employed in 2019 which is a rare phenomenon not only in Bulgaria, but also globally. Sofia is the Bulgarian city with highest number of employed people with university degree. The demographic factor is the biggest threat to regional employment. In Montana for instance, the number of employed people in active age decreased with 15% in one decade only and at this point there are no signs of recovery.
