Number of blood donors in Bulgaria has declined dramatically

Photo: archive

All centers for transfusion hematology in Bulgaria are alarmed by the significant drop in the number of blood donors. In Sofia alone, in the period March 1 to March 15, the number of blood donors dropped by nearly 600 people - 1,138 people compared to the same period in 2019 when blood donors were 1,739. This limits the ability to keep needed reserves of blood and blood components.

Global scientific studies do not report the transmission of coronaviruses by transfusion or transplantation. Therefore, those who wish can donate blood without any risk to their health.

It is also important to know that transfusion centers in this country perform routine screening of candidate blood donors and do not allow persons with clinically manifested respiratory infections to donate blood.

Daily transfusion of blood and blood components is required by patients at onco-hematology clinics, pediatric onco-hematology clinics, those at need of cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, etc. Many emergency medical interventions also require blood transfusions.
