In 2019 Bulgaria has approved 885 applications for international protection, Eurostat data show. Sofia responded favorably to one out of three applications received. Most often, protection is given to Syrian citizens, who account for 70% of cases, followed by Iraqi citizens 11% and Afghani- 7%. Last year, 65 displaced migrants from other EU countries were welcomed to Bulgaria. In the EU, 295 785 foreigners were granted protection last year, a drop of six per cent in comparison to 2018. In Europe as a whole, 1 out of three applications for protection have been approved.
