Boris I, also known as Boris-Mihail was the ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire between 852 and 889. He introduced Christianity in Bulgaria and made this country the cradle of Slavic spiritual culture.
In 889 Boris abdicated and retired to a monastery. He died on May 2, 907. Boris I was canonized soon after his death.
