Heroes of Sevastopol ferry ceases operations

Heroes of Sevastopol (Geroite na Sevastopol) which is the last ship of the ferryboat line Varna- Chermomorsk- Poti has ceased operations. The vessel is owned by the state-owned company Bulgarian Marine Qualification Center, but no vessel operator voiced willingness to rent the ship due to bad market sentiment.

The railway-ferry line between Varna and the former Soviet Union began in the 1970’s with four vessels-two Bulgarian and two Soviet ships. In 2009 Ukraine refused to maintain the railway-ferry line Varna-Ilyichevsk-Poti/Batumi and the Ukrainian state company Ukrferry replaced the Heroes of Shipka and the Heroes of Pleven vessels with new, smaller and modern ferryboat ships.
